Question:
We have a 2-car garage with 2 one-car garage doors. We only
need a garage door opener on one of the doors. The ceiling
in our garage is about 4 feet above the top of the garage door.
Also, I'd like to install the opener myself. Any opinions
or experiences (positive or negative) would be greatly
appreciated.
Answer:
-Better to have a ceiling too high rather than too low. For a 4-foot drop
I'd suggest building a frame out of perforated angle iron or some such so
that the opener can be rigidly supported at the correct height. Don't try
to get away with just pipe hanger strap or wire.
-If you don't mind my 2 cents, I strongly recommend the new type of
opener with a continually scrambling remote signal. The new strain of
germs (crooks) in my area have discovered a hand-held TV remote control
sized gadget that will read your electronic signal when you close the
door to drive off down the road, while they stay safely in the bushes or
in a car across the street. As soon as you're gone, their gadget will
emit the identical signal and "poof", they're in your garage, where they
can take their sweet time breaking into the rest of the house. The newer
scrambling openers will change frequencies everytime it's activated,
thus, the "read" that the crook just got will be useless.
