Question:
I have a 103 year old carriage-house that is presently used as a garage.
It has two wooden side-sliding doors with rollers in an overhead track. Each
door is about 11' wide. The tracks are old, tired and about 50 years past
their prime. Because of the height and angle of the roof and the width of
the doors, overhead replacements will be difficult and expensive. Anyone
aware of a supplier that might carry "replacement" tracks/hardware for
side-sliding doors of this size?
Answer:
-Find a farm supply store. They usually carry such things. A couple of years
ago, I redid a similar door. The tracks for a 18 foot wide opening cost about a
hundred bucks (including all of the associated hardware). the doors themselves
cost me a lot more to repair...
-If you want to replace with the original type track, your local welding
shop can make new track, since it's just flat cold rolled steel, if it's
like most track from that era. Replacement rollers to go inside the frames
should be available at larger hardware or farm centers. New pins for the
hinges on the hangers can be a size larger if they are sloppy. I rebuilt a
set on my 1916 farm this way.
-These are still used for barn doors. Any place that carries farm
supplies will have parts.
