Question:
Clopay is the customer-installable brand of garage doors at my local
Home Depot. Anyone have any experience with this brand? Last time
I did this (another house) HD sold me a Stanley, which worked fine,
but they don't seem to carry that brand any more. I had to use the
extension springs, as they wouldn't sell me the torsion spring, but
it looks like Clopay had a customer-installable version of the torsion
spring. Anyone know about this?
Any info would be most welcome...
Answer:
-I don't have the Clopay, (Overhead doors, I think) but I did install
it myself. Ok, had a helper. THE hardest part was removing the old,
1-piece door. You have to have the door up to remove the springs. At which
point you have a 16'x7' piece of steel 7' in the air. After all the
warnings from books and magazine articles to let a professional tighen the
torsion springs, I did it myself. Not a big deal. My non-insulated door
had 2 springs and I didn't have to use much force/strength to wind them. I
did have 2- 24" x 1/2" stainless steel rods from a welding class for the
winding sticks. A heavier door might require more umpph, at which point you
may want someone who's done one before
-I did not install these myself, but I have installed doors myself. Not
too hard if they are designed for the DIYer. I suggest following the
instructions and all the precautions.
