Question:
Has anybody ever installed their own roll up garage door ? I was
looking at the Wayne Dalton roll up doors and they don't look
that hard to install.
I even seen two women on one of those home improvements
show go through the installation process.
They have the new "torque-master" torsion bar system that you use
a power drill to wind it. Much safer and easyer that the older torsion
systems that you had to wind with tow metal rods.
Answer:
As I was reading down the thread, just what Mr. Shelby said came to mind, so
I want to emphasize it. Coming myself from a family that was in the
business, he made good points and gave good advice, so, if and/or when you
undertake the installation, research the product you're installing
thoroughly. Knowing what to do is not rocket science. The caution is in
the "how to" because of the dangers involved. Knowing, for example, just
how much to tighten the springs is important for safety as well as proper
door operation.
Be sure to have some type of failsafe to contain the spring in case it
breaks, so, if it does, it will only scare the bejeesis out of you (they do,
whether you're right there or somewhere else in the house!). A broken
spring or other part flying off has the potential to go through one's head
like going through a rotten pumpkin. I'm not saying this to scare or
dissuade one from the work, just to warn one to have a healthy respect.
I've seen some flying spring damage on garage walls, cars and on some guy's
left arm and it ain't pretty. That said, however, one tip is that,
generally, DIY installers don't tighten the springs enough rather than
overtightening them.
