Question:
I have a 176 lb garage door and need to buy springs for it. Lowes and
Home Depot only go up to 150 lb. Can any one offer insight into where
to buy springs?
I have been told I only need two 80 lb springs. The springs that came
off the garage door are 27"x1.5". This is bigger than the 150 lb door
springs.
Answer:
the size of the springs at the garage door place that i buy from have
most of the springs the same size, they are color coded with a paint
drop of red, green, black, yellow on one end of the spring.. i asked the
guy what they meant and he never answered, but did make sure i got tow
of the same color when i was replacing the springs.. this company
installed the door about 30 yrs. ago when i had it built.. they kept a
fine on the door at their office, i just give my address and they look
in the file and know what i need.. its a big place and they do alot of
wholesale/parts business, not some guy working out of his house making
his money doing installs of doors...they will not want to sell to you as
they dont make money selling parts....
go to a big garage door installer like overhead door company if they
have one in your area(check the yellow pages and buy two springs they
have to be balanced... and if one broke then the other is soon on its
way)...
I know nothing about replacing garage door springs but I have
seen the consequences of a do-it-yourself job. I have no ties and
nothing to gain when I tell you to use a professional for the repair. My
job is a surgical nurse. A few years ago we treated a well known surgeon
who was fixing the spring on his door. The spring collapased on his hand
and ended his career.
I would hate for anyone to go through bad times that could be
prevented. Sorry to bring up this negative stuff but I am tired of
seeing workers hurt doing their job.
