Question:
I have a 6 year old Genie worm drive garage door opener that makes a hell of
a racket. An application of the
Genie lubricant makes it nice and quiet for a couple of weeks, but then the
noise level increases significantly. It seems like the lubricant should last
a lot longer than just a couple of weeks. Any ideas what the problem may be?
If I had my choice - I think I would rather have a chain drive, but it's a
bit late for that.
Answer:
i got a sears screw drive about 25 yrs old. when it gets noisey i just
take the screw part off and bring it in the back yard and use a can of
brake cleaner(the stuff you spray on brake parts )so you can get the old
grease off.. i then use soadp and water to clean if off real good then
then put some white lithium grease, or garage door grease on the screw
drive and it works fine... the old grease holds onto the dirt in the air
and makes it work harder and vibrates more...... a spray on of WD-40
will do the same thing for a day or two.. wd-40 is a solvent and will
thin the grease on the screwdrive and let it operate for a few days with
no problem..... when the weather gets cold it, the grease gets really
hard and will cause problems.....
