Question:
If you have used a kerosene type heater, I would like to know if there is a
odor problem. Also, and more importantly, if there is a carbon monoxide
problem.
My garage is well sealed and insulated, and I want to heat it occasionally
to work in it on weekends.
I would like to run the heater over the night before I use it, and being
connected to the house safety and odor are major concerns.
I don't like the idea of cracking the door or window, since it defeats the
purpose of the heater, and would be an invitation to loose valuable tools
and equipment.
I live in Minnesota where it gets very cold, my garage is 650 sq ft ( r25
ceiling, r11 wall insulation, insulated doors) and the heater I am looking
at is 23000btu. Big enough?
Answer:
I use a kerosene heater in my garage/shop and have never noticed an
odor problem except for the first minute or two after startup. I'm
not sure the BTU of my heater but it heats the shop portion which is
one stall of a 3 car garage.
To be on the safe side use a CO detector. I would also not be to fond
of the idea of letting it run unattended.
Kerosene heaters are not good for small enclosed areas due to oxygen
starvation but for a large garage they should be OK.
