Question:
I have an elderly neighbor whose overhead garage door spring has broken.
The other spring seems fine. How does one replace it without getting a
smashed face or broken arm please.
Answer:
I'd strongly recommend having a pro replace the spring. Those things can
kill. Some time back, the spring on one of my parents garage doors broke
just sitting there. There wasn't a safety wire on the thing, ant spring
fragments made gouges in the plywood on the other end of the garage.
If the springs are extension type you can open the door and replace them
relatively easy. You should not attempt to replace a torsion (twisting)
spring yourself, they must be replaced with the door closed, so they are
under heavy tension. You can easily be injured if you're not careful. Get a
garage door pro to do it.
