Question:
Garages with door openers may not provide security.
Recently, my neighbor's garage door opened when they were away
for the weekend. I noticed it because the light on the Stanley garage door
opener was flashing, just as if the door hit an obstruction when closing.
I tested my own door, which has the same Stanley door opener, and found that
if you yank up on the door when it is closed, it will open and the light
will flash. I still don't know what made my neighbor's door open. It could
have been a potential burgler, or maybe expansion of the door as the
temperature changed.
Since then, I have cranked the sensitivity down to make it tougher to
yank it open, and we always lock the door between the kitchen and garage.
If you have a garage door opener, check it out. It may not be as secure as
you thought it was. Has anyone else experienced this?
Answer:
If you don't keep the door between locked and secured, you are inviting
theft and breakin. There have been a number of reports recently about a
new trend in car thieves - they break into the car, steal it, drive to
the home of the owner and use the remote to let them into the garage,
from which they break into the house. There have also been reports of
thieves cruising the streets trying a number of garage door openers until
they find one that opens.
A couple of months ago, a gang of thieves in Vancouver BC was arrested
with a sophisticated device that could be programmed to open ANY garage
door by remote control.
Please DO NOT consider garage doors that can be opened by remote control
as secure.
