Question:
Most of the garage doors I see advertized now are steel. I was
wondering if this is just the material they make garage doors with
now, or if the flyers are just promoting the more expensive doors.
Are wood panel and fiberglass still available and if so how do they
compare in price? The door I have now 16' wide and was dented on the
bottom panel by either a snow plow or a garbage can blowing around in
a storm. How dent resistant are the steel doors? Is Home Depot a good
place to buy / have install the door?
Answer:
Wood doors are definitely more dent resistant than the flimsy steel
ones, but they are REALLY heavy. I had a local garage installer put
some in the garage next door that I was using. But I wanted something
more secure than the normal cheapo steel door.
Look in your local yellow pages under garage doors and see how many
other options you have besides Home Depot. Call them. make a couple
of them come out and give you estimates on different types of doors!
When it came time to put 2 garage doors in our new garage, I settled on
the medium style of steel insulated door that Home Depot had. I
installed them myself and it was pretty easy. The new springs that you
tighten with a drill work great. But they probably only work on the
lightweight steel doors.
The cheapest steel door has no insulation and my other next door
neighbor has it and its really clanky and noisy. I opted for the one
with the layer of insulation on the back just for sound deadening and
there is another that is insulated and has an interior layer as well.
more money though.
