Question:
I'm looking into building a tool shed in the backyard. On TV the other
day on 'Home Savvy' I think it was...they had a show on the Simpson
strong-tite tool shed kit, model KSHD. Has anyone ever built a shed with
one of these kits? The Kit the have sells at Home Depot for $92, you
supply the lumber, and is designed for a shed 7'6" deep X 10' wide. I
would like to build a shed 12' deep X 10' wide to keep within the
building codes for my area of 120 sqft for a backyard she
Answer:
I have a buddy who works for Simpson Strong-Tie. When I
was getting ready to build a shed, I mentioned it to him
and he said he could get me a kit well below retail. So,
for $30.00 I took him up on it.
The kit had all of the hardware you'd need (sturdy hinges,
latches, etc.). It even came with a 22.5 degree "jig" to
assist in cutting the 2x4's. The plans were straight
forward and easily customizable. I had to extend the
length of mine to fit a golf cart inside it... no problem.
The plans even detailed how to shingle the roof, in case
the person needed the information.
All in all, it was a worthwhile investment for me... $30.00
that worked great. However, I didn't have to pay the full
price. I can attest that they work, but you have to decide
if you want to spend $90.00 on it. Keep in mind, some of
that hardware you are getting isn't soo cheap. Good hinges,
etc. will add up as well as the screws, braces, etc. It really
depends on who comfortable you feel without the kit.
FWIW... We just had 90 mile an hour winds up at the lake
this past weekend. My shed (and deck) are still standing.
